  • Application

The RT0402 Stingray is intended for military/defense/aerospace deployed computer networks. With the onboard 1 and 10 Gigabit Ethernet ports, Stingray is an ideal forwardly-deployed vehicle-mounted battlefield dual-server that offers the greatest Size, Power and Weight Efficiency (SWaP-E), while offering the most amount of flexibility in the same dense form factor. Stingray can also be used in Internet-of-Things, industrial and commercial platforms where PoE, TOE, and intelligent local routing is needed. It can be mounted virtually anywhere—including on telephone poles and powered by solar panels to form an Internet-of-Things Intelligent Gateway. The RT0402 is fully compliant to MIL-STD-810G, MIL-STD-1275D, MIL-S-901D, DO-160D, MIL-STD-461E and has ingress protection up to IP66.

  • General Description

The RT0402 “Stingray” is a first generation ultra-rugged, lightweight 4-port full-featured software router with an integrated 12-port Layer 2/Layer 3 managed switch. Divided into two key functional blocks—router and multi-port switch—the RT0402 places an enterprise-class rack-mount functional set into a mobile, 2-pound, conduction-cooled box.

The 4-port, 1 Gigabit Ethernet router is based upon Cisco’s Embedded Services Router (ESR) 5921 software router that’s designed for low-power, embedded and mobile applications. A software router intended for medium-duty applications, ESR runs Cisco® IOS® Software to enable Cisco’s Mobile Ready Net—a concept of loosely-coupled nodes that can self-form to create a network (including over radio-based links). The router’s functions are what designers expect: all applicable IPv6 capabilities and protocols, the industry’s most common routing algorithms and protocols including OSPF, RIPv6, BGP, multi-cast, and more. The ESR 5921 puts special emphasis on working in systems where the LAN connectivity—wired or wireless—is unreliable, constantly changing, or simply unknown. Features in the 5921 software set optimize routing for ad hoc networks, degraded packets, and gives priority and QoS to data, voice and video packets (depending upon programming).

In RT0402 Stingray, programming is accomplished by a full-featured embedded single-board computer. Cisco’s 5921 Embedded Services software Router (ESR) is running on an Intel® Quad Core Atom™ processor with 2MB of L2 cache operating at 1.91GHz. The CPU features deep sleep capabilities for ultra-low power consumption when not active. The CPU is coupled with 4GB of 1333MHz DDR3 RAM with Error Correcting Code (ECC). Local non-volatile storage is used for ESR code, routing tables, and other network configuration parameters. Besides hosting the ESR router, the processor interfaces to a 4-port Ethernet switch via an Intel® I210 Gigabit Ethernet controller. There is no internal connection between the router and the separate 12-port Gigabit Ethernet switch: all connections are done externally by the user for maximum flexibility. The router is programmed via LAN or optional RS232 serial port.

On the Ethernet switch side, it is designed to provide two 10G XAUI ports and 12-ports of 10/100/1000 Mbps Ethernet with Power over Ethernet (PoE, IEEE 802.3at at 56V nom.) on four of the 10/100/1000 interfaces in a fully ruggedized, conduction-cooled, sealed system, operating from -40°C to +85°C. This system architecture simplifies networking applications that require the most advanced routing device that can act as a switch without intelligence, an intelligent switch with up to Layer 3 features and as a router with up to Layer 8 features all in the same ultra-dense form factor.

The RT0402 switch side is equipped with a 416MHz MIPS processor with 128MB of DDR2 memory for large frame buffering and 16MB of flash NVRAM for system configuration of the managed switch. In addition, using multistage Versatile Content Aware Processing (VCAP), Stingray delivers VLAN and QoS processing, enabling the delivery of differentiated services, security through intelligent frame processing, and egress frame manipulation—all at wire speed with no CPU intervention once programmed.

The switch portion on Stingray is designed to provide users remote access to the switch with full management access via either Ethernet or an RS232 serial interface, and provides for a browser-based GUI and SNMP management.
  • Technology Used

Stingray utilizes two types of independent hardware technology to provide both routing and managed switch functions.

To enable routing functionality, RT0402 employs the most efficient Quad Core Atom™ processor from Intel®. The Intel® Atom™ Bay Trail CPU is a third-generation Atom™ processor with a fully integrated memory controller, 2MB of L2 cache operating at 1.91GHz and deep sleep capabilities for ultra-low power consumption when not active. The CPU is coupled with 4GB of 1333MHz DDR3 RAM with Error Correcting Code (ECC) and the Atom™ processor hosts the Cisco® ESR 5921 routing software and interfaces to the VSC7434 switch externally via a user-connected Ethernet connection.

For the RT0402, Stingray leverages Microsemi’s VSC7434 E-StaX-III-48 next-generation Enterprise Ethernet switch, Stingray utilizes 12-ports 10/100/1000 Mbps (four with PoE+) and two ports of 10G XAUI. The XAUI ports can also be configured as two 12Gbps stacking ports. This technology is supported via a 416MHz MIPS processor with 128MB of DDR2 memory for large frame buffering and 16MB of flash NVRAM for system configuration of the managed switch. In addition, the VSC7434 has very low latency, less than 100ms failover, and multistage Versatile Content Aware Processing (VCAP), which delivers VLAN and QoS processing, enabling the delivery of differentiated services, security through intelligent frame processing, and egress frame manipulation.

    Router Functions and Specifications
ESR 5921 software router is used to implement Cisco’s Mobile Ready Net, a loosely-coupled ad hoc network designed to be self-forming and self-healing as nodes appear and disappear. IP multiplexing minimizes redundant packets to maximize available bandwidth, while radio-aware routing moves packets based upon link conditions. There are up to 32 VLANs supported per router, with IPv4/IPv6 packets and a Cisco® iOS Zone-based firewall. Routing protocols include: RIP v1 and v2, OSPF, EIGRP, BGP, Cisco® Discovery Protocol, IP Policy and Multicast Protocol Independent Multicast (IGMP) v1, v2, v3, and Cisco® Group Management Protocol. Security protocols include IPSec, SSL/TLS, SRTP, 3DES, AES and IKE. Voice, video and data packets are supported, and address conservation includes NAT (Many-to-One and Many-to-Many), DHCP and Easy IP Phase 1. ESR 5921 is optimized to run on the Intel® Atom™ on Linux with a small memory footprint.

  • Cooling

The Stingray router/switch is equipped with GMS’s patent-pending RuggedCool℠ technology, the industry’s most unique conduction cooling system promising system operation over -40°C to +85°C. RuggedCool provides the lowest thermal resistance to the case, keeping the CPU within temperature limits at full load, while still providing the highest shock specifications known in the industry. The RT0402 is a stand-alone, fan-less system and should be mounted directly to a metal cold plate surface that provides a reliable conductive thermal path.
