"EAGLE" SB1102-HDVR

RANCHO CUCAMONGA, CA, September 16, 2015 – General Micro Systems, Inc. (GMS), designer and manufacturer of embedded computing products for defense, aerospace, medical, industrial, energy exploration and compute-intensive applications, and the leader in deployable high-end Intel® processors since 1986, introduces the next-generation deployable, rugged four-channel video recorder that can capture, process and distribute to LAN multiple channels of high-definition video in real time with only one frame of latency.

The GMS SB1102-HDVR “Eagle”—a follow-on to its predecessor SB1002-HDVR—is a small form-factor rugged (-40°C to +85°C) “video recorder/workstation processor” capable of simultaneously and in real time capturing four independent HD-SDI 1080p video channels at 60 fps, performing H.264 compression on-the-fly, storing the video to onboard removable SSD nDrives at up to 1 TB each, and distributing the video streams to seven (7) Gigabit Ethernet ports.

Astoundingly, there’s virtually no latency (only one frame) between the original video sources and when they appear on the SB1102-HDVR’s Ethernet switch LAN outputs. This means head-down operators using only cameras can operate their vehicle in real time and respond to bumps or obstacles even while four channels of HD video are being encoded, recorded, or encrypted.

“No one packs more rugged Intel® computing muscle into such a small space than we do,” says Ben Sharfi, CEO and chief architect of GMS. “Our Eagle extreme rugged HDVR does at least three things better than any other solution: record and store and distribute real-time video with only one frame of latency; pack 2U server-like performance into a tiny box; and it’s the most rugged with no moving parts and has the most features and I/O per cubic inch.”

SB1102-HDVR

• Real-time HD: 1080p capture @ 60 fps allows real-time record, display and distribution (1 frame latency)
• Intel® Core™ i7: “Broadwell-H” 4-core CPU with 32 GB ECC RAM: workstation performance for digital maps, overlays, applications
• Intel® Iris™ Pro: GPU-like graphics for 3D, DirectX 11.2, OpenGL 4.3
• Small size: (5.4” x 6.5” x 2.75”) and weight (low as 5 pounds) at only 40W
• I/O and more: 7 Gigabit Ethernet, 5 USB, 2 Serial, 2 optional SAM I/O modules
• Extreme rugged: fully liquid sealed to IP67; fanless -40°C to +85°C conduction-cooled; 100g shock

Without the onboard hardware digital signal processing (DSP) handling the heavy-lifting compression and video manipulation, even Intel®’s best Core™ i7 CPU couldn’t keep up. Instead, up to 90% of the 4-core™ Intel® 5th Generation Core™ i7 CPU (“Broadwell-H”) is available for other tasks such as adding video overlays, creating moving maps, performing target recognition/tracking, and other image or I/O manipulation. Onboard Intel® Iris™ Pro graphics is 2x better than with Haswell (4th Gen) and comparable to a standalone GPU, according to Intel®, making 3D image manipulation and computer-generated (CG) media a reality.

The Core™ i7-based CPU powers a full-featured rugged workstation computer that can handle myriad tasks including: processor-intensive application software, security encoding, running virtual machines in secure partitions, switching and distributing the real-time feeds to up to six (6) Ethernet ports, and manipulating other system I/O on optional GMS SAM sites for frame grabbers, MIL-STD-1553, ARINC-429, CANbus, RS-232/422/485, GPS and more. New in the Intel® 5th Generation Core™ i7’s are low power modes, taking the 3.4 GHz CPU down as low as 1.9 GHz, resulting in the SB1102-HDVR consuming a mere 40W in certain modes—while still capable of operation over the fully sealed and fanless -40°C to +85°C temperature range at up to 100g of shock.

Typical applications in defense and aerospace include mobile situational awareness in armored or tactical vehicles with four cameras providing a 360-degree view around the vehicle. Uncompressed, HD-SDI (SMPTE 292) real-time video from four cameras can be fused and presented to drivers and passengers via Gigabit Ethernet, enhanced, manipulated or overlaid with moving maps and other battlefield information. All the while, the four HD 1080p video streams can be recorded (up to 3 TB, total) and even encrypted on-the-fly. With this much video and processing performance, the possibilities are endless.

Future FAA/NTSB aviation requirements for video in the cockpit, cabin and cargo bay can easily be handled by the rugged SB1102-HDVR. The SB1102-HDVR would also be an ideal exposed joint avionics/mission/payload processor on a UAV/UAS platform, or could be used to capture/record/distribute surveillance video at an oil well job site with four (4) HD camera feeds.

Other features not found in the typical COTS product include: a 15-second fast boot GMS-controlled custom BIOS with power-on BITE/BIST, TPM-controlled root of trust security features in concert with Intel® TXT, VT-x/d2, and Secure Virtual Machine capability. There are: seven (7) Gigabit Ethernet ports with TCP/IP offload, two (2) USB 3.0 and six (6) USB 2.0, two (2) RS-232/422/485, eight (8) buffered GPI/O, and dual DVI-D/HD Video plus one RGB. GMS-supplied API middleware can be used for Record/Play and even FIPS Encryption/NSA Secure Erase. Temperature and voltage monitors provide operating system feedback of key hardware functions so management agents can take appropriate high-reliability action.

SB1102-HDVRs are fully sealed and conduction cooled, operate from -40°C to +85°C, and can withstand up to 100g shock and 8g rms vibration @ 5-2000 Hz (MIL-STD-810G). The SB1102-HDVR weighs as little as five (5) pounds, and is cigar box size at 5.4” x 6.5” x 2.75”.

GMS’s SB1102-HDVR supports Windows® 7 or better; Red Hat® Enterprise Linux® (RHEL) 6.6 or better; CentOS 6.6 or better; Fedora® 20 or better; Ubuntu® 12.10 or better; and Debian® 7 or better. Other operating systems available upon request.
