Product Innovations of the Year

Propelling GMS into the Future

It’s been a monumental year here at General Micro Systems and we have you all to thank for it. We have won numerous government and industrial contracts and have expanded our workforce to meet market demands and the needs of our growing customers.  To give you a better understanding of why 2014 has been so successful, we’d like to showcase some of our hottest, most popular products. Some of these have been wildly favored all year and others have just recently been transformed from concept to reality, but all of them are gaining a whole lot of steam and fast!

Starting with our Blue Series of product, the SB1002-MD has been coveted for its multi-domain, NSA-secure architecture. Otherwise known as “Golden-Eyes,” this small form factor computer has two fully independent systems inside one enclosure with the only shared component being the raw input power. Boasting the same Intel® Quad Core™ i7 Haswell processor as the SB1002-MD, but with only one domain, the SB1002-XV, or “Peacock,” incorporates high end graphics processing from AMD’s Radeon™ family with up to 2GB of GDDR5 SDRAM and 5 display interfaces inherent to the video card.  The SB1002-RT “Raven” has as much RAM (up to 32GB of 1600MHz DDR3 with ECC) as the previous two systems, but is different in that it offers ten Gigabit Ethernet Ports, two 10Gigabit Ethernet ports, and one Gigabit Ethernet port for router configuration, all supporting Layer III software routing functions with customizable rules.

Also coming out of the Blue Series are two highly sought after board level products, including the VSB2102 “Royal Albatross” single board computer.   This product offers a high-performance, upgradeable CPU with VME-64/2eSST support via Tundra® Universe II™, and is targeted for applications where ultra-high speed processing power is required with outstanding graphics for upgrading legacy hardware or for new applications where hard Real Time is required. The VPXCB1002 “Sparrow” is an Open VPX, 3U module offering up to 1TB mSATA for OS boot, a vast selection of system I/O for multiple applications ranging from rugged embedded systems to medical electronics, and is fully compliant to VITA 46/47/48.

Moving onto the Orange Series, the SO302-SW “Tiger” has seen a lot of action in the second half of 2014 because of its fully managed Layer II switch with Layer III features.  The “Tiger” has twelve Gigabit Ethernet ports and two 10Gigabit Ethernet ports so it resembles the “Raven” from the Blue Series but it utilizes the more advanced Intel®  Xeon® Ivy-Bridge-EP CPU with 10 cores and hyper-threading capabilities on each core for total of 20 logical cores.  The “Tiger” is also equipped with a high-speed connector for greater I/O capabilities and an optional Baseboard Management Controller (BMC) for detailed system health monitoring and reporting.

This year has really pushed GMS into a world of emerging markets, including into the realm of smart displays.  But, in typical GMS fashion, we had to package our smart displays into the most rugged enclosures with the most robust, “boot kick” glass available so you can take them wherever your operation takes you.  Two of our most popular smart displays are the HD17W and SD19.  The HD17W comes with a 17 inch diagonal screen in 16:9 format with 1920x1080 native resolution. One thing that sets us apart from other companies that sell simple rugged monitors is that our displays have full blown computers inside, offering native I/O and video processing through Intel® Haswell or Xeon® processing. The HD17W has two SAM™ I/O sites that can be configured for custom I/O such as MIL-STD 1553, Wi-Fi/BT, GPS, CANBus, GPIO, etc.  The SD19 offers a 19 inch diagonal screen in 5:4 format with 1280x1024 resolution.  The SD19 offers a wide variety of I/O, including Fiber and Copper Gigabit Ethernet ports, two PS2 ports, and even a CompactFlash socket for external storage, among others.  Our smart displays come with fully daylight viewable screens and optional Night Vision Imaging System (NVIS) for covert operations.  We also offer various glass coatings including Anti-Reflection and Anti-Glare for crisp displays regardless of the environment as well as fixed and removable storage options.

If that isn’t enough information, be sure to check out one new system that we recently added to the website, the SB1002-FSS (file storage system).  A unique feature of the “Seahawk” is that it stores up to 8TB of removable SSD in a single canister that can withstand up to ~10,000 insertion cycles.  Another recently revised system is the SB1002-HDVR, which is a four channel HD-DVR recorder that utilizes the latest Texas Instruments’ DaVinci DSP for real time encoding and decoding and supports H.264 compression on all four channels simultaneously!
