Small Form Factor Systems
Systems that Match Performance to your Program’s Packaging Requirements
As rugged systems requirements become more demanding, it is crucial to have the ability to select different packaging options in order to achieve optimal results. GMS, which continues to define the industry’s direction in the design and manufacture of board and system-level products, has taken the lead on this concept with three series of system offerings that comprise the very latest in embedded computing technology.
GMS has divided its small form factor systems into three series for easy identification: GREEN, BLUE and ORANGE. Each series is targeted for a specific power and performance envelope, thus offering OEM system engineers a wide range of performance, heat, price and ability to upgrade.
General Micro Systems' small form factor computer systems are targeted for applications where traditional VPX/VME/cPCI ATR packaging (card cage, power supply, fan trays, etc.) can not be considered due to size, weight, cost or other limiting factors. They also pack the highest performance with the lowest power consumption in the smallest package possible, making them a responsible choice for space constrained applications. All of our systems use only embedded devices to provide long life cycles, and to withstand harsh environmental conditions for MIL/Aero applications - meeting MIL-STD-810G, MIL-STD-1275D, MIL-STD-901D, MIL-STD-461E, DO-160D and IP67, to name a few.
Our products are broken down into the following performance categories:

ApplicationGreat Albatross is designed to provide the ultimate and first-of-its-kind server class 6U VME SBC replacement of multiple legacy VME SBCs (x86 or PowerPC™) with a single SBC utilizing Intel’s Virtualization Technology (VT-x/VT-d2). Furthermore, with the Trusted Execution Technology (TXT), the SBC is secure from unauthorized boot devices and unauthorized replications of the system. The VME200 is ideal for data centers, factory automation, medical, and defense applications, where big investments have been made on a VME platform and where true hard “Real Time” is required. No other bus architecture can provide this hard “Real Time” performance like VME. The Great Albatross may be ordered from the factory with operating systems such as Windows® or Linux® pre-installed.

General DescriptionThe VME200 "Great Albatross" is the first of its kind Intel® Xeon® D 6U VME SBC module based on GMS's upgradable CPU "computing engine" technology. It is designed to provide the highest level of server performance possible in a ruggedized, single-slot VME card. It may be operated in all VME 0.8 pitch backplanes in VME64 or VME64x form factors with 3-row or 5-row connectors with or an optional P0 interconnect. Great Albatross is targeted for applications where high-speed processing power and up to 16 cores of computing power is required for upgrading legacy hardware or for new applications where hard Real Time is required. The Great Albatross is the highest performance VME SBC in the market with vast I/O options and an upgradable CPU for extended life cycle applications.Great Albatross supports the latest, most power-efficient Intel® Xeon® processor D with Hyper-Threading for a total of up to 16 physical cores (32 logical cores) operating up to 1.5GHz and having the ability to Turbo Boost up to 2.1GHz. To harvest this incredible performance, the CPU is coupled with up to 64GB of DDR4 RAM organized in two banks with ECC support (2-bit error detection and 1-bit error correction). All these Xeon® D cores coupled with Great Albatross’s I/O can be used to create multiple virtual machines (VMs) allowing a single Great Albatross system to replace up to 32 separate single-processor systems. The I/O subsystem for the Great Albatross is designed to support a wide array of standard and custom I/O functions. The VME200 standard configuration supports two 10 Gigabit Ethernet front panel ports, two rear Gigabit Ethernet channels with TCP/IP offloading engine (TOE) for VITA 31.1 switched Ethernet, one USB 3.0 and two USB 2.0 ports to the front panel, four USB 2.0 to rear, one DVI-I port (optional VGA instead) to front panel, four COM ports with RS-232/422/485 options, Super I/O with COM port to front panel, audio headset jack, and sixteen buffered GPIO lines to the rear. Optional additional I/O functions are provided via the 64-bit, 66MHz PMC site or x16 lanes PCI Express XMC site.Great Albatross also offers the most secure storage subsystem possible. It supports up to 32MB BIOS Flash with hardware-write protect and secure erase. The onboard fixed mSATA boot device and removable 2.5” SATA (lose PMC/XMC) SSD drive provides optional hardware write-protect, ATA Secure Erase and encryption functions. The VME200 can optionally support FIPS-140-2 and FIPS-197 encryption standards for ultra-secure data storage. These data security functions, along with Intel’s AES-NI encryption and the onboard the Trusted Platform Module (TPM) 2.0 plus Intel’s Trusted Execution Technology (TXT), make Great Albatross the smallest and most secure embedded server system on the market.

Technology UsedGreat Albatross utilizes the latest Intel® Xeon® processor D CPU, which Intel® slots between the Xeon® E3 and Xeon® E5 server processors. Xeon® processor D is ideal for microservers and embedded platforms, boasting up to 12 cores/24 threads (16 cores in commercial temperature) and advanced thermal management. The Xeon® D supports Hyper-Threading for a total of 24 logical cores (32 logical cores in commercial temperature) and supports 18MB of cache shared among the cores. The processor clocks up to 1.5GHz per core (12-core version) with Turbo Boosting up to 2.1GHz. On Great Albatross, the Xeon® D CPU also supports 64GB of DDR4 RAM with ECC. The Xeon® D processor is considered the most powerful per-watt server class processor on the market, with many added power-saving features. It also boasts Xeon® E5 server class RAS features like PCIe hot-plug and CMCI. Xeon® processor D also contains security functions such as Intel’s second-generation Virtualization Technology VT-x and Trusted Execution Technology (TXT). The Xeon® D platform supports PCI Express Gen3, USB 3.0 and SATA 3 for the highest performance possible on a server platform.
