GENERAL DESCRIPTION

The X9 SPIDER™ Rugged Smart Display is a compact, fully rugged touchscreen display with a built-in powerful X9 Mission Computer, removable drive, and vast I/O capabilities. It is available with 16:9 aspect ratio in 12”, 17”, 24”, and 32” diagonal LCD touchscreens at SD: 1280 x 800 (12”), HD: 1920 x 1080 (17”), and UHD (4K): 3840 x 2160 (24”, 32”, and optionally 17”) resolutions. It is a fully sealed, submersible, and conduction-cooled system, including the removable drive and I/O receptacles when cables are connected or dust caps are used, that is less than 1.5 inches thin. This fully rugged system is available in industrial grade (R1) or fully rugged (R5) with operating temperatures from -40 °C to +85 °C.

The built-in powerful X9 Mission Computer uses an Intel® Xeon® W processor with 8 cores and 24 MB of Smart Cache shared among the cores. It operates at a base frequency of 2.6 GHz and can Turbo Boost up to 4.7 GHz. It is equipped with up to 128 GB* of DDR4 RAM with ECC operating at 2133 MT/s. It provides 20 PCIe® Gen4 lanes and can take full advantage of this bandwidth using a variety of Rugged Mezzanine Carriers (RMC) and High-Speed I/O devices (17” and larger only).

The optional GPGPU is an NVIDIA® RTX™ A4500 MXM module, which occupies the RMC-100 site and provides 7168 CUDA® cores, 224 Tensor cores, and 56 RT cores. The CUDA® cores support 23.7 TFLOPS FP-32 performance, the Tensor cores support an incredible 189.2 TFLOPS, and the RT cores support 46.2 TFLOPS. It supports 20 GB of GDDR6 RAM organized by 256-bit and operates at 1.3 GHz for 512 GB/s transfer rates. The CPU is directly connected to the GPU via 8 PCIe® Gen4 lanes for a 128 GB/s transfer rate.

The screen is protected with the most robust glass available in the market and can optionally withstand a direct “boot kick” without damaging the display or touchscreen. The standard touchscreen is resistive, which is the most common type of touchscreen for rugged environments due to its reliability and ability to work with gloves. However, it can optionally be equipped with a multi-point projected capacitance (PCAP) or infrared touchscreen.

The screen is a high-bright, sunlight readable type with up to 800 nits (cd/m2) of brightness. A unique “COV” (cover) button instantly lowers the backlights of the LCD and buttons to a pre-programmed, ultra-low level for surveillance environments. It can optionally be equipped with a Night Vision Imaging System (NVIS) MIL-STD-3009, which reduces eyestrain in applications where night vision glasses are used. It supports optional coatings to maximize screen readability and clarity in wet, bright, or multi-light source environments. Coatings include anti-reflective (AR), anti-glare (AG), polarizer, and water-rejection options.

Primary connectivity is provided by three Thunderbolt 4 ports with up to 40 Gbps data throughput and up to 100 W of Power Delivery each with support for daisy-chaining. The graphics engine combines with Thunderbolt 4 connectivity to tunnel up to four separate DisplayPort video streams. It also supports up to four optional 100 GigE ports with quad optical transceivers. Additional I/O includes Hi-Speed USB, UART/COM ports, and General Purpose I/O (GPIO) lines.

Optionally, the standard copper Thunderbolt receptacles can be upgraded to GMS’s patented fiber LightBolt receptacles, which provide up to 100 W of Power Delivery to distances up to 50 meters using our custom hybrid fiber/copper LightBolt cables. This allows for various X9 SPIDER modules to be located and powered in separate locations from the Rugged Smart Display.

X9 SPIDER™ OVERALL SYSTEM ARCHITECTURE

The X9 SPIDER™ family of products redefines embedded computer architectures. The traditional computers in the market (rugged or commercial) require the user to pre-configure their systems up front, making systems either over-built and expensive or under-developed for future growth. This lack of modular expansion capability often forces a full technology refresh. Traditional systems also have to be redesigned when any components such as the CPU, memory, or certain I/O components go end-of-life, rendering the entire system obsolete.

The GMS X9 SPIDER™ family of systems are the result of over 45 years of experience as the market leader in small form factor systems. The X9 SPIDER™ is an open Distributed Computer Architecture (DCA™) where each specific function is defined in a sub-system and linked together via a single LightBolt™ cable that carries high speed (40 Gbps) fiber and 100 W of power, allowing units to be placed up to 50 meters away from each other in any format: Daisy Chain or Star.

This open DCA™ mitigates obsolescence by upgrading/replacing only those functions required to be upgraded. The power delivery to X9 SPIDER™ systems are extremely versatile, flexible, and cost effective. Each system may be powered on its own or by any of the other systems in the “loop”. There are also options for external power supplies with battery back-up that can be added as needed. These sub-systems include Artificial Intelligence (AI), Storage (fixed or removable), GPU, Workstations, Switches, and Displays as well as many others.

The backbone of the X9 SPIDER™ system architecture is Thunderbolt™ 4 which consists of a single cable connecting each box with 40 Gbps transfer speeds, 4K/8K video streams, and Power Delivery making the X9 SPIDER™ the ultimate expandable system.
