Application

Zeus is designed to replace up to six different rugged workstations into a much smaller, lighter package using far less power. It is ideal for combat and surveillance vehicles where several computers are used for data collection, targeting / mapping and data acquisition. Zeus supports most popular Hypervisors offered by VMware®, WindRiver® and Microsoft® and may be shipped from the factory with operating systems such as Windows®, Linux® and/or VMware® pre-installed.

General Description

The SZC91x Zeus is the first fully rugged server with six dedicated virtual machine I/O in the industry. It is designed to provide the highest level of server class performance possible in a fully ruggedized, conduction cooled system, fully operating over a full -40° C to +85° C. Zeus is targeted for applications where ultra-fast multi-core CPU performance is needed with vast amounts of ECC protected RAM. Zeus supports six physical CPU cores with Hyperthreading for a total of 12 logical cores, each operating up to 2.4GHz with the ability to TurboBoost up to 2.67GHz. To harvest this incredible CPU performance, the CPU is coupled with up to 96GB of RAM, organized into three banks of two DDR-3 DIMM arrays with error correcting code (ECC). The ECC RAM provides two bits of error detection with one bit of correction and supports up to 1333 mega-transfers per second (MTS) between CPU and memory. 
 
The I/O subsystem for Zeus is designed to support the widest array of ultra-high-speed I/O devices with modularity and security. The I/O consists of the host CPU I/O and six Virtual Machine I/O (VMIO) sites. The Host CPU supports one PMC/XMC site, dual Gigabit Ethernet ports, multiple USB 2.0/3.0 ports, Serial ports, eSATA, audio, and digital I/O lines. Also, there are two removable 2.5” SSD drives that are supported on the host side, as well as, one mSATA with secure erase and write protect drive for use as a local boot device. Other optional I/O devices for the host CPU include a GPS for accurate positioning and time stamping of data packets and a Baseboard Management Controller (BMC) to detail system health monitoring and reporting using industry standards and IPMI 2.0 via a dedicated Ethernet port.
 
Up to six VMIO sites are available on the SZC91X. Each VMIO site is fully independent and is configured as a “share nothing architecture”. Each VMIO site is connected to the Host CPU via PCI-Express lanes only, thus all I/O transactions are fully monitored and supervised with the TPM/TXT/VT-x security engines to assure the host CPU authorizes all accesses. 
 
There are several VMIO modules available as standard configurations to support Virtual machines or to extend the host CPU I/O as desired. Additional VMIO are under development, and custom I/O designs are welcome.
 

Technology Used

The Zeus utilizes the most powerful Intel® Westmere Xeon® 5600 processor. The Westmere-EP CPU is a 3rd generation Nehalem processor with a fully integrated memory controller for the best possible memory performance. This CPU is considered the workhorse of the server market with many added security functions, such as Intel’s 2nd generation Virtualization Technology VT-x and Trusted Execution Technology (TXT) for secure computing. Also, the graphic engine is based around the powerful NVIDIA® FX 8800 or the ATI E4690 GPU for outstanding performance in 3D and 2D accelerations and is fully virtualized. The I/O is provided via 36 lanes of PCIe 2.0, which are monitored via a TPM module to assure full security and safe operation.

Cooling

The Zeus is equipped with the most unique cooling system in the industry and is the only server that operates from -40° C to +85° C at full load! Its patent pending cooling provides the lowest thermal resistance to the case while providing the highest shock specifications known in the industry. The SCZ91X is a fan-less system for reliable operation and can be mounted directly to a surface or be used as a stand-alone system.
